Dr Simon Howell hosted a Panel Discussion in which Drs Neil Carrier, Gernot Klantschnig, and Clemence Rusenga joined online. The panel discussion outlined the project’s contributions in terms of results, research outputs, and methodological innovations. The unique challenges of conducting research on cannabis in African communities as well as the urgent need for similar projects in the region were also highlighted. The familiar conundrum of how researchers create rapport with participants to overcome socioeconomic barriers takes on very specific dimensions in African communities. Such methodological developments will contribute to knowledge and improve research projects in Africa. A relatively under-researched aspect that generated considerable debate is the relationship between cannabis and gender. For instance, how and to what extent are women included in or excluded from, and impacted by the financial gains of cannabis cultivation and farming. Overall, the event was well-attended by activists, academics, and government stakeholders.
